Getting started

After you have installed the IM sequencer you are ready to start the program. IM Sequencer can be started from the installation directory or trough the shortcut that has been added to your start menu.

 

When you have started the IM Sequencer you are presented with the main screen. Within the main screen you see a couple of option panes.
The task panes enables you to quickly configure or see important information.
 

 
Creating a new steps configuration

 

1.        Click the menu option "New steps configuration", this option can be accessed trough the "Steps" menu command.
 
2.        When the FIM/MIM is not installed locally you will be asked to provide the correct connection information.
 
3.        After you have provided the correct connection information (if FIM/MIM is locally available the connection will be created automatically for you,
       your current identity will be used for local connections) You will see the "New steps configuration" dialog.
 
4.        Then you can create new Multi or Single steps.
 
5.        When you are ready creating the steps and have set the filename for the steps configuration file you can press the "Ok" button.
       This will create a new steps configuration file, after that you will be asked if this steps configuration file should be loaded automatically.
 
       If you press "No" the main IM Sequencer screen will be presented, if you press "Yes" the validation process begins and the steps are being
       loaded.
 
       note: If you don't specify a path for your new steps configuration, the file will be saved in the RunProfiles directory within the IM Sequencer installation directory
 
6.        Continue to the "If all Steps are successfully loaded" section.

 

 
Loading an existing steps configuration

 

1.        Click the menu option "Load steps configuration", this option can be accessed trough the "Steps" menu command or on the generals tasks pane.
 
2.        When the FIM/MIM is not installed locally you will be asked to provided the correct connection information.
 
3.        After you have provided the correct connection information (if FIM/MIM is locally available the connection will be created automatically for you, your current
       identity will be used for local connections).
 
       You will see the "Select a file dialog", here you can select a valid steps configuration file. The default open directory is always "RunProfiles"
       within the IM Sequencer installation directory.
 
       It's advised to save all your new steps configurations to the default "RunProfiles" directory.
 
4.        When you have selected the steps configuration file the validation process begins and the steps are being loaded.
 
5.        Continue to the "If all Steps are successfully loaded" section if the steps are successfully loaded, if the validation failed because there
       are incorrect management agents. The system will ask you to correct the steps configuration.

 

If all steps are successfully loaded

 

       When all steps are successfully loaded the statistics pane will be shown indicating that all steps are loaded, also the steps view will be shown
       with all the steps available in the steps configuration file.
 
       When all steps are loaded you can edit the steps configuration trough the "Edit steps configuration" menu option, this option can be accessed
       trough the "Steps" menu command or trough the generals tasks pane.
 
       Before you start you can check the options screen if any changes need to be made before continuing.

 
 
Starting the steps
 
       Now all steps are loaded you can check the run options, if the options are set correct you can start the steps.
 
       Press the "Start steps" button in the "Steps" menu or on the general task pane. The sequencer will now start processing.

 

1.        All management agents will be checked against the FIM/MIM server, if an agent is not or no longer available, the run will stop.
2.        The steps on the root level will be started in the run mode that is configured.
3.        The statistics pane will update information when it becomes available, the IM Sequencer status bar shows the current progress.
4.        The currently running step will be colored.
5.        When a step finishes the statistics pane will be updated.
6.        The step that finished will be colored in the steps view according to its step result.
       The activity log will show you more information about the current progress.
7.        If the "Generate report" option is enabled a report will be generated in the reports directory.
8.        If the "Email report" option is enabled the report will be send to the specified email recipients.
9.        When all steps are finished you will be presented a information/warning or error dialog depending on the entire result.

 

 
Stopping the steps

 

       When the steps are running it's possible to stop the steps.

 

       Press the "Stop steps" button in the "Steps" menu or on the general task pane. The sequencer will now stop all running steps.
 
       Note: This option is only available when the IM Sequencer is currently running it's steps.

 

1.        All running steps will be stopped.
2.        You will be presented with a stopping dialog.
3.        When all steps are finished the "close" button on the dialog will be enabled.

 

       Warning: When you stop the steps a report will not be generated and emailed, this also means that all result that are
       collected during a run will be discarded, use this option only when absolutely sure.
 

 

Creating a new scheduled task mannually

 

1.        Click the menu option "Schedule new task" within the IM Sequencer "Tasks" menu.
 
       Note: Use the task creation wizard to create new tasks
 
2.        A name and description will be automatically created and a daily trigger will be created automatically.
       The daily trigger is set to trigger at the time created. More information about a task can be found here.
 
3.        When you have provided the required fields you can go to the "Triggers" tab within a single Task, all configured triggers will be shown in the list.
       To add new Trigger press the "Add" button. The new Trigger dialog will be shown.
 
       The trigger tells a Task when it should start.
 
4.        Within the Trigger dialog you can select the Trigger type and set the required fields, more information about Triggers can be found here.
 
5.        When you have created a valid Trigger you can continue to the "Steps" tab within a single Task. all configured steps will be shown in the list.
       To add new Steps press the "Add" button. The new Step dialog will be shown.
 
       The steps tells a Task what it should start.
 
6.        Within the Step dialog you can select the Step Type and set the required fields, more information about Steps can be found here.
 
7.        For a task you can define any condition, conditions need to be evaluated to "true" before the task start. Conditions can be used to check if specific management
       agents are running or if specific files need to be available. Conditions can be found here.
 
8.        When the triggers and steps are created you can optionally configure alerting, more information about alerting can be found here.
 
9.        When finished you can advance to the "Advanced" tab within the Task.
 
10.        Your Task is finished, when you press the "Ok" button the new Task will be created. The IM Sequencer Service load the created task and start the task is necessary.
